BOOK REVIEW
This series is a staple of the dark, brooding angsty variety!! I was on the edge of my seat from the very beginning.
I will say about first book in the series! The first probably ¼ should come with a sex trafficking warning. I went into this series blind, as a friend of mine recommended it to me, with such ferocity I knew I was going to love it. I was a little taken back at first and unsure how it would pan out!! But all I will say is, don’t let the first half of Buttons and Lace deter you from the mastery that is about to unfold!!
Buttons and Lace follows our fierce and badass heroine Pearl as she is uprooted from her life in New York where she is sold from a human trafficking ring to the highest bidder. Finding herself in the middle of showdown between two families, Pearl goes head to head with her captor in a fight for freedom!! But is it freedom she will want when Crow is finished with her?
The minute we met Crow I knew I was in troubled, brooding and cruel to the bone. Watching his armour slowly crack and the heart of gold that hides beneath shine through!!
Buttons and Lace is the ultimate opener to this series that only gets better between each book!! I read the whole series in less than 4 days, I was wholely and completely captivated from the beginning!!
Right when things start to get spicy!! We have Buttons and Hate the true magnitude of the dynamic between Pearl and Crow takes hold. The entire novel is centered around their button barter system in the deem for Pearl to earn her right to freedom! But soon buttons aren’t the only thing Pearl is giving away, her heart becomes the centerfold for currency.
Set in the hills of Tuscany I adored the imagery and backdrop to the story. I lived vicariously as Pearl soaked up the sun in Italy exchanging hand cuffs for luxuries.
The angst ridden, soul sucking moments were breath taking – and yes I meant every word I just said!! It is the perfect amount of pain and passion that leaves you reeling for more.
The interlude and story progression is well paced and intriguing. There is never a dull moment at the Barsetti residence. Penelope Sky has a way of delivering on shock value with poignancy and magnitude, the ending of Buttons and Hate blew me away with frustration and happiness at the same time.
Then the series finishes of with Buttons and Pain! It’s a toss Hate and Pain for which was my favourite in the series!! The the last two books are both incredible! Pain couldn’t have described this book better, it’s the pragmatic beautiful kinda of pain, that has you screaming with desire as Crow and Pearl go neck and neck for the last time!!
I never thought I would like Cane (Crow’s Brother) but I adored his story arch!! I’m yet to read his series!! But I can undyingly say, I cannot wait to delve further into his character.
Pearl is the strong, independent heroine despite circumstance throwing her every curveball possible.
The relationship arch between Pearl and Crow was inspiring and beautiful; as they both overcome the demons of their past in a quest for love – Albeit begrudgingly on Crow’s part.
Now….lets talk the ending of this series! OMG I was blown away! It was one of the biggest shock/amazement moments I have ever read!! I was soo enthralling to be apart, I completely adored every second and couldn’t recommend this series more if I tried!
If you enjoy a dark, cruel, angsty ridden romance than you will adore this series!! It’s impossible not to fall in love with Crow! He might even take the place as one of my favourite Book Boyfriends – and I’m not saying that lightly!!
Now the Part where I have to vent…spoilers beware….
Pearls first boyfriend Jacob I’ve never hated a character soo much!! Yet again another moment where Penelope Sky turns everything on there head. I did feel like there was something fishy about Jacob’s character from the beginning. But Pearl’s warmth for him never faulted at the start. Yet when we found out he sold her to pay of his debts, I was livid! I swear I was seeing red!
The beautiful thing I found with this series, was the way every emotion Pearl felt, you felt it too. Soo beautifully delivered, every time she was cut down, you felt it to the core as well! Throw in Crow’s rejection or denial and every time I felt my heart slighting ache a tiny bit more! Just when the pieces start to come back together and a tiny bit crack once again! I really enjoy that slow twist and turn dynamic and the happy ending is always worth it in that scenario!!
Bones…What a name and What a monster!! I was completely awe struck with the ending to the series!! I had expected Pearl to give herself up, but the planning and execution was incredible!! Pulling out that blade I was tearing apart the pages to find out what was happening next!! Such an incredible way to round out the entire series with a bang to say the least!
Love this series!! I have reread it twice already and can’t wait to dive straight into Cane’s triology next! This was the first novel I had read by Penelope Sky and I can’t wait to read more based on how epic this series was!!
I will say; prevail past beginning half of the first book – it’s the dark sex trafficking that I found hard to read – but the entire novel is not like that at all!!
It’s a 5 star review from me!! I adore, loved, cried and danced on the inside reading this!!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
